 Consular Services

The Consular Section of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Brasília provides official consular services to Nigerian citizens and document-related services to foreign nationals, in accordance with Nigerian laws and relevant regulations.

Important: Most services require submission of printed documents to the Embassy after the initial request is made. Applicants are advised to read the requirements carefully to avoid delays.

SECTION: How to Apply (Step-by-Step)

Step 1:  Request for Consular Service

To request for consular service kindly fill the Consular Form (Please click here to fill the form)

Applicants must send a formal request by email clearly stating:

  • Full name (as shown on Nigerian passport)
  • Passport Number
  • Consular service required
  • Brief explanation of the request
  • Contact phone number and address in Brazil
  • Any urgent timeline (if applicable)

Step 2: Completion and Submission of Required Forms

After the email request is reviewed, the applicant will receive the online form to be filled which will generate

  • Consular Application Form
  • Document Collection Form
  • Formal Application Letter, including a numbered checklist of required attachments

Applicants must:

  • Print these forms
  • Attach them to all supporting documents
  • Submit the complete set by hand or by courier to the Embassy address above

Step 3. Processing Updates by Email (Two-Stage Notification)

Applicants will be notified by email as follows:

  1. First Notification:
    Application received and instructions to print and submit documents (forms attached).
  2. Second Notification:
    Application approved and document(s) produced, awaiting signature and official stamping.
  3. Final Notification:
    Document(s) ready for collection.

Identification

  • Nigerian passport data page (copy)

Photographs (Strict Requirements)

Applicants must strictly comply with photo specifications:

  • White background
  • Applicant’s name written at the back of each photograph
  • 3 × 4 cm photographs for most services
  • 5 × 7 cm photographs for Emergency Travel Certificate applications

Where indicated, supporting documents must be notarized at the notary.

CONSULAR SERVICES (Individual Service )

Citizenship Attestation / Consular Letter

This service is used for confirmation of Nigerian citizenship, official attestations, and general consular requests required by institutions or authorities.

Requirements may include:

  • Nigerian passport data page (copy)
  • Two passport photographs (3 × 4 cm, white background, name written at the back)
  • Birth Certificate, Attestation of Birth, or Declaration of Age (notarized copy)
  • Parent(s)’ Nigerian passport data page (copy), where the applicant does not hold a Nigerian passport
  • Proof of change of name (e.g., marriage certificate), where applicable (notarized copy)
  • Supporting document(s) justifying the request (notarized copy/copies)

Police Character Certificate Authentication

Important Notice:
The Embassy does not issue Police Character Certificates. It must be obtained directly from the Nigeria Police through the official portal:

To authenticate a Police Character Certificate at the Embassy, applicants must submit:

  • Nigerian passport data page (copy)
  • Two passport photographs (3 × 4 cm)
  • Police Character Certificate (copy)
  • Relevant payment or processing receipts (where applicable)

Marriage Certificate Authentication

For authentication or confirmation of marriage documentation.

Typical requirements include:

  • Nigerian passport data page of husband (copy)
  • Nigerian passport data page of wife (copy)
  • Marriage Certificate issued in Nigeria (notarized copy)
  • Two passport photographs (3 × 4 cm)

Emergency Travel Certificate

Issued for urgent travel to Nigeria in cases such as expired passport, lost or stolen passport, or emergency situations.

Requirements may include:

  • Nigerian passport data page (copy)
  • Two passport photographs (5 × 7 cm, white background, name written at the back)
  • Expired Nigerian passport data page (copy), where applicable
  • Flight ticket or travel itinerary to Nigeria (copy)
  • Police report (for lost or stolen passport cases) (copy)
  • Birth certificate of applicant (notarized copy)
  • Parent(s)’ Nigerian passport data page (copies), for minor applicants
  • Parental consent letter signed by both parents (notarized copy), for minors

Additional information required:

  • Complete name of departure airport
  • Complete name of destination airport in Nigeria
  • Reason for the Emergency Travel Certificate request

Name Correction / Name Declaration

For cases where an applicant’s name differs across official documents.

Requirements may include:

  • Nigerian passport data page (copy)
  • Two passport photographs (3 × 4 cm)
  • Document showing incorrect name (notarized copy)
  • Document showing correct name (notarized copy)

Additional Requirement:

A Court Affidavit may be required where there is a spelling error, missing name, or inconsistency in the number of names.

For authentication of personal, educational, or institutional documents not covered under other services.

Typical requirements include:

  • Document(s) to be authenticated (notarized copy)

Driver’s License Authentication

NOTICE:
This service is currently suspended. Applicants are advised to pursue the appropriate Brazilian certification procedure.

Birth Certificate Letter / Birth Certificate Support

For confirmation or supporting letters related to birth documentation.

Requirements may include:

  • Nigerian passport data page (copy)
  • Two passport photographs (3 × 4 cm)
  • Birth certificate or attestation of birth (notarized copy)
  • Parent(s)’ Nigerian passport data page (copy)

Corpse Repatriation Permit

For repatriation of deceased Nigerian citizens or cases involving Nigeria-bound remains.

Requirements may include:

  • Death Certificate (notarized copy)
  • Non-Communicable Disease Letter issued by the relevant State Health Authority (notarized copy)
  • Embalmer’s Affidavit (notarized copy)
  • Letter from funeral home confirming hermetically sealed metal casket (notarized copy)
  • Deceased’s Nigerian passport (copy) or affidavit confirming Nigerian nationality (notarized copy)
  • Formal request letter from funeral home (notarized copy)
  • Waiver for Repatriation of Corpse issued by the Federal Ministry of Health, Port Health Services, Abuja (notarized copy)

Applicants must also provide funeral home contact details and destination/receiver information.

Special Category: Minor Applicants

For minor applicants, additional documentation may be required:

  • Parent(s)’ Nigerian passport data page (copy)
  • Parental consent letter signed by both parents (notarized copy)
  • Birth certificate of the minor (notarized copy)

This applies especially to Emergency Travel Certificate and citizenship-related requests.
