The National Universities Commission (NUC) is a parastatal under the Federal Ministry of Education (FME). It is responsible for the development and management of university education in Nigeria.

The main functions of the Commission include, among others:

1. Granting approval for academic programmes run in Nigerian universities.
2. Granting approval for the establishment of higher educational institutions.
3. Ensuring quality assurance of academic programmes.
4. Serving as a channel for external support to Nigerian universities.
